Uni Update and Q&A!

So I've been at uni for a term now... I've actually managed to survive a term (well just about survive). If you didn't know already, when I first started uni back in the end of September, I wasn't the biggest fan of it; shall we say. I still don't know why I hated it so much... I think it was because I felt soooo out of my comfort zone and I didn't feel ready at all! I felt like someone had literally got my life in their hands and just chucked it up in the air.
All I kept seeing was people from my old school uploading Freshers pictures with their new flat mates on Facebook, looking like they were having the best time... whereas with me, it felt like I was living a nightmare! I had made some really good friends, but I guess because I don't live in halls, I'm not going to be as close to them as I would have if I lived with them 24/7; which is a natural feeling I guess?!

Christmas Gift Guide – What to get those who are Tough to Buy For || Guest Post

Beauty Fanatic
Put together your own beauty kit for them and include all the treats they’d love. From pampering through to getting ready to go out – add in a range of items that will take them from the home to a night out on the town.

A face mask and body scrub, along with some skin care products will help them unwind and feel rejuvenated. Pick up a cute make-up bag – you can choose something one that really matches their personality. Etsy has loads so you’ll be spoilt for choice. Do they have a favourite magazine? Pop one in, and if it comes with a free gift, then that’s an extra gift for them! Little nail varnishes and eye shadows work well too. If you have some budget left over then go for a beauty treatment voucher. HD brow treatments are huge right now but if you’re unsure what they’d like, opt for a monetary voucher. Oh, and don’t forget chocolate – key staple of Christmas gifts!

The Expectant Mother
A ‘mother and baby’ gift basket will be the perfect present for the expectant mother. Make her feel pampered and cared for while she’s going through a somewhat uncomfortable time. Treats for before and after the birth will give them something to enjoy now and something look forward to.

A spa voucher will allow them to take some time out and relax – a foot or back massage might be just what they need if they’re suffering from swollen feet or backache. Think about what they may be going through and the relevant gift, and you won’t go far wrong! A clay cast and photo frame set will go down well – something exciting for when he/she arrives. For something fun try a quirky maternity t-shirts and be sure to include a soothing-scented candle and chocolates. If there’s something they haven’t been able to eat or drink since they’ve been pregnant, pop in one of those too…maybe they can’t wait for their favourite coffee again.

The Traveller
Do you know where they’re next planning to go on their travels? Or do you know the kinds of holiday activities they like to do? Base your gift choices on the answers to those questions, but for as a general guide go for the following types of items.
A digital camera will stand them in good stead wherever their next adventure is. A photo album or voucher to get some images printed will allow them to have some memories from the trip around the house. If you do know their next destination a book on the language or top places to go to will be helpful and thoughtful. If you’re looking to create a lower budget (but equally amazing) gift then combine things like the language book and a compass with a number of funny items, such as snorkel, waterproof coat, sun block, and a handy bag with some holidaying-essentials inside. If they’re looking for inspiration on where to go next, go the extra mile and pick up a book on top travel destinations.

Gadget, gadgets, gadgets!
The gadget man or woman can be a difficult person to buy for. Choose gadgets based on one of their interests, such as music, cooking, technology or sport. Some tech pieces can be a bit expensive so if you want to give them a few presents, pick a main gift and then find a few related, but cheap, items that fit with the particular interest you’ve chosen.

A techy watch that has Smart features like GPS is great for those that love watches or general technology. If they love their iPad or phone then a special case, such as 3D printed one which you can have custom designed, will show you’ve really paid attention to what they like. They love sports? Try one of the latest fitness pieces, like a pedometer. If music is their passion go for special headphones for the device they listen to it on. If you’re looking to a get a few smaller bits then go for the headphones or case and team them with things like a smartphone projector or an electronic kit for them to fix or adapt one of their many cool toys; you pick these kinds of things up at a fairly low cost.

Skin Care Saviours

Hello!!!! I'm back... sorry my posts have been a bit 'meh' recently, I've explained everything over here! Do you notice anything different about my blog?! ;) I thought it was time to make a few changes... I'm going to be tweaking things here and there until I get it to how I want, but I hope you all like the changes so far :)

Now onto this weeks post...
My skin has been dreadful recently; it happens every year around this time because of the cold weather, alcohol and a lot of crappy (but amazing) food. So I've needed to take care of my skin before it turns into one giant spot. I have been loving a handful of products that have maintained my skin and kept it looking the best it can look. Some products I have mentioned before, so I am not going to go into detail about them, I'll just link you to other posts where I've mentioned them in more detail.

Saying Goodbye...

Recently I've been feeling crap about my blog. It's got to the point where I have no time to fully commit to it and make it the best it can be. I started blogging because I was interested in sharing my opinions online and I was influenced by other bloggers.

Current Music Favourites

Being a student at uni means I get a lot of work and the only thing to keep me sane is music. I sing all the time when I'm at home (and no I can't sing). I often get asked by my sister; "Do you ever shut up?!" and the answer to that is.... no. Especially because of all the amazing music out at the moment.

I'm going to share with you a quick list of the music I have been loving at the moment:

Made In The AM - One Direction

Blue Neighbourhood - Troye Sivan

The Les Miserables soundtrack (Of Course)

Chaos and The Calm - James Bay

EP- Ryan O'Shaughnessy

Hobbie Stuart Covers and Originals (Of Course)

Sorry for this being a quick post! I am struggling to find the time to blog regularly due to uni and I'm not really enjoying blogging as much! Hopefully, around Christmas time I'll get back into blogging again... I'm going to prepare loads of posts for you in the new year!

What music have you been loving recently?
Leave your current music favourites in the comments below :)

Is Uni My Only Option? || Guest Post by Kate

Hello Petals of Perfection readers!

My name is Kate, however Sophie often refers to me as Katie, Katherine, Kassandra and many other nicknames…and to clarify my name is just Kate! I’ve featured in a few blog posts, but more often than not Sophie and I tweet regularly, maybe you’ve seen it!?

I’m writing this post because I offered to help my best friend out, after all she is at university, but I also think the fact that I have A LOT to say about life and things may have also persuaded her! I’ve often joked with Sophie about not ever having things to say if I were to write a blog, and for those who know me, definitely know that isn’t true!

So here goes…

Now, I thought I’d tell you a bit about myself and how I know Sophie! I’m Kate (obviously) and I’m 18, and am currently employed as a Nanny. My dream is to become a Paramedic…I know…not one the most glamorous of jobs in the world, but someone has to do it! I have blue eyes, blonde hair (originally) and I’m a huge fan of red lipsticks. Sophie might suggest that I have too many red lipsticks that are ‘the same shade’ but honestly they are all different! (Sophie: They are not different at all). I love my eyeliner and lipstick…they are probably the only bits of makeup that I can execute well!

Sophie and I have known each other literally since we’ve been born, and well, what can I say, we’re inseparable! Our Dads have known each other since they were 8, and have stayed best friends ever since! So really it was inevitable that we were going to end up besties! If I could sum up Sophie in 3 words they would be; Beautiful (have you guys seen how stunning she is!)(Sophie: Thank you... but have you seen yourself!), Smart (she’s ridiculously brainy and doesn’t give herself the credit!), Reliable (honestly the most reliable person in the world, always there for you… even at 2/3 in the morning), and Fun (I cannot tell you how many times she’s had me crying of laughter!) Whoops…that was 4…and there are so many more!

(I know…we’re right posers)

So, as I’ve said previously I want to be a paramedic. However, I’m currently employed as a nanny. Therefore the aim of my blog post is to prove that not getting in to university the first time round is NOT the end of the world! Ok, ok I admit…I did believe that it was the end of the world when I got the news that I wasn’t going to university, but quickly afterwards I realised that I’m 18…not 80…I have so much time on my hands, and that maybe having this year out would help me!

For those who are currently in the UCAS period, or in sixth form, college etc. there is quite a lot of pressure about going to university, almost as though that is it, if you don’t go to university you will fail in life. Well for starters, that is utter rubbish! The school I went to, after I told them that I wasn’t going to university…they almost ‘gave up’ on me, like I was the anomaly in their statistics! I still came out at the end of sixth form with some fairly decent results, which can STILL enable me to get into university!

It may sound odd, but honestly I think that the universities saying no has done me the world of good! For those of you who are currently questioning whether or not university is for you, I’d take the year out to not only discover what works for you, but to discover yourself. There are so many options and programmes that you can take as part of a gap year, some do cost money but some are completely free! Many university’s look for experience, having more experience is more likely going to get you a place. A gap year can help you in many different ways also, such as being able to get some money behind you, in order to pay for the fees!

As I have said previously, I am currently a Nanny. I was very lucky, and the family that I babysat for offered me a job. So now I look after 3 adorable munchkins! Charlie (8), Toby (5) and Jack (2). However, I had already applied for apprenticeships in a medical environment, I also looked up GapMedics, a 4 week course abroad, working in a hospital. I had considered many different options, therefore I’d recommend having a look around. I had also decided that I didn’t want to apply through clearing, I believed that this year out would help me, mentally and physically. By exploring your options, it enables to show you what you like and dislike. If you apply for a course, and you believing that it’s the right one, and finding out that it’s not quite right, can make it difficult in finding another course!

Now, I still want to apply for university, and have already started the application process again. I don’t want to put anyone off university, I just want to let you know that university isn’t the only option after leaving school! I thoroughly enjoy working as a nanny, and I do feel like it’s given me a new perspective on how things work, as well as gaining experience when handling children. I hope that you find some of what I’ve written useful, especially to those who are unsure of their options after school has finished.

Thank you Sophie, for allowing me to try out blogging and writing a guest post on your blog. Maybe you’ll let me write again some time ;)

Autumn Favourites/Staples || Guest Post by Macey

Hi there Petals of Perfection readers! It’s Macey again, a friend of the gorgeous Sophie. Sophie asked me to do a blog post for her and so I of course said yes!! Today I’m going to take you through my current autumn staples although these travel with me into winter as well.
I am aware that Bath and Body Works is not in the UK, (sad times), but living in America does provide that and thank God because Bath and Body Works is beauteous! This is not about candles because I actually have not had time to go down to B&BW for the WONDERFUL candles. Anyways, moving on! The Japanese Cherry Blossom scent. As you can see, I have the body wash, lotion, and body spray. I got these last autumn time and so I associate them with that time of year. The scent is light and not too strong, I’m really very bad at describing scents and I have never smelt a real Japanese cherry blossom before so I can’t say it’s spot on, but it wears really nice and when all three are used together, it’s a winning combination!!
Next up, I have the Ogx Moroccan Sea Salt Spray. This stuff is amazing!! It smells nice, and provides a whole lot of texture. I stumbled upon this gem last October as well and I am so so glad I did. I tend to cut my hair in the spring, so by autumn it is long and I like to go to for some casual waves on a daily basis. This spray just added a lot of texture, dimension (if that’s a thing haha), and grip to my hair and kept it looking fantastic.

Now I don’t have one of the B&BW candles, but I do have Gold Canyon candles which, I have to say, are the best candles around. They burn down so well, their scent permeates not only the room they’re in but just spreads out so nice. They don’t burn uneasily either, but the wax is always going down at an even rate. I’m not sure if they ship to the UK, but I’m sure you can find some of their products on Amazon. Here, I have my favourite autumnal scent which is ‘Pumpkin Pie’. This smells of, pumpkin pie, of course, and I would say it’s nice a blend of a sweet and spice, not overpowering at all.
Okay so this isn’t something you can wear or put on, but it’s SO CUTE I couldn’t resist adding this in! It’s an adorable little owl I picked up ALSO last Autumn, (man that was really a great time for great stuff :’)). He’s called Franklin and he is my favourite autumn d├ęcor item. Everyone has that little something that they enjoy putting out during their favourite time of year, and he is mine.
Around this time, everyone needs a good pair of combat boots! I got these, oooh would you guess it, LAST autumn time!! I actually got them for my birthday last November and I love them so much. I think they can complete your look for the day, or maybe just add a special something.
And of course, the classic flannel. These are so fashionable especially when the weather is getting crisper, but is not freezing cold. They keep you warm but aren’t something to weigh heavy or hot. You can get these in so many different colours, pick one up the next time you see one!
I honestly envy pretty much everywhere else right now as California is having a hard time cooling down, last year this time, we were still hitting 90 degrees Fahrenheit, pretty much up to the last week of October. Thankfully we’ve only hit 90 a couple of times this month, that’s still really frustrating to me haha, to everyone who actually has four working seasons, you are so blessed, and do NOT take it for granted. I just went on a whole tangent there, but anyways, this is all I’ve got for my autumn staples, really hope you enjoyed! These were probably all things you’ve heard of :’) I’m not sure, but they are my go-to’s.
Thanks to Sophie for asking me to do this post.
Let us know your autumn staples in the comments below!!
(Thank you Macey for guest posting again for me! I have so much work etc pilling up atm that I'm finding it hard to find any free time... so bare with me haha)

Beauty Blogger Awards 2015

I was lucky enough to get invited to the Beauty Blogger Awards on Sunday 4th October at the Pillar Hall, Olympia! I have been invited to a few blogger events in the past but most have been quite hard to get to or I have been busy on the days  :( So I was extremely excited to go to this one and see what I had been missing all these times!
I decided to take my friend Kate/Katie (whatever her name is) as she is also a make up lover like myself and I know that she's very into blogging/ she reads my blog a lot so I thought this would be a nice way of saying thank you for being so supportive of it! We set the alarm for 5:45am so we could aim to get up and ready by 8. (Of course we didn't actually get up at this time) ... we managed to drag ourselves out of bed at 6:30am which gave us a couple of hours to get ready :')
By 8am we were ready to go... But no, I was still not happy with the way I looked and going to a beauty blogger event put the pressure on! In the car I was constantly moaning about my hair... and for basically the rest of the day hahaha! (and yes snapchat needed to know that)
After jumping on and off different tubes with our Starbucks we eventually got there! It was across the road from the station which was great because knowing us, we would've gotten lost! The main event was the Olympia Beauty exhibition which was open to the public, with endless amounts of stalls where companies promoted and sold their products! In a separate room was the exclusive Beauty Blogger Awards, with a live stage and a few stalls as well as a free goody bag with products worth up £250.
My favourite stall in this room had to be the NYX one! I had heard about NYX products but never been lucky enough to buy any of their products so I was eager to see what they were all like! We went in the photobooth a couple of times and shared it on social media, by sharing it we got given goody bags each filled with Nyx products! It was like heaven in a bag!
We went from the little room exclusively for the Beauty Blogger awards, to the main exhibition a few times throughout the day and yes I did cave in and buy myself a few little treats ;) I have been looking for a contour stick for AGES and the only one I could find in shops was the Clinique one, which is wayyyy over my budget, so I was so excited to see the WonderStick by Nyx cosmetics. It was only £9 with contour on one side and highlight (not shimmery) on the other side... I can already tell that this is going to be my new favourite item in my makeup collection! I also got a tapered crease eyeshadow brush and an angled eyebrow brush from crown which came to around £7, which I thought was an absolute bargain, as well as a China Glaze nail varnish for my sister!
After a day of looking around the exhibition, trying out what felt like millions of products and listening to a few talks on the live stage at the Beauty Blogger awards, it was finally time for the actual awards! I can't remember the names of the bloggers who won the awards, but what I do know is that they all deserve them! Blogging/vlogging is not easy at all and it can literally take over your life (which you can argue is good and bad)... you could tell how much the awards mean to these bloggers and it made me so happy to be part of this lovely community!
After a long but amazing day, it was finally time to go home! I was so excited to get home and show my family all of the complementary makeup I had been given and to try it all out!

Thank you so much to the organisers and sponsors who invited me to the Beauty Blogger Awards 2015! It made me so excited for more blogger events in the future... If you haven't been to a blogger event before and like the look of this one, I highly recommend you go! It's a chance to meet fellow bloggers and to get a few tips and tricks about blogging... it's also a great day out for everyone and shouldn't be missed :)

Did you go to the Olympia beauty or the Beauty Blogger Awards? What was your favourite part about the event? Leave some comments below :)
